Scylla and Charybdis is the ninth mission of the original Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere, and is a mission in which the player can influence the path the story takes. This mission separates into the UPEO (III) and Neucom (I) Arcs.

Description

"Another message came in from Commander Park, this time with a top-secret mission. According to it, Delegate Clarkson is going to Cape Rainy to mediate a truce between General Resource and Neucom. Fiona will accompany the Delegate as an in-flight escort, and the only other escorts will be two planes: the player and Erich. With a bad feeling about the lack of escorts, the group departed to Cape Rainy."

Briefing

As we have gotten General Resource and Neucom to suspend hostilities for one hour, our very own UPEO Del. Clarkson, for the purpose of ceasefire arbitration, is now headed for Cape Rainy in a personal plane. You and Erich will be escorting his plane. In addition, Fiona will be in that plane escorting the Del. personally. This is a top-secret mission, and thus, only a select few will be present. - Dismissed.

Objectives

The mission's primary targets are a squadron of five General Resource F/A-32Cs that the player must destroy while also protecting Clarkson's personal plane. Abyssal Dision and Keith Bryan are also present, piloting a F-22C Raptor II and a F/A-32C, respectively, but cannot be targeted. Once the five hostiles are shot down, the mission ends, and the player is awarded Mission Accomplished automatically.

After the mission, Rena arrives as backup along with an allied R-101 Delphinus #1, as Commander Park informs the UPEO units that Clarkson and Fiona have been engaging in espionage and that their new orders are to shoot down Clarkson's personal plane. The player can choose to shoot it down, killing Clarkson, Fiona and everyone else aboard, beginning the UPEO (III) Arc, or shoot down the UPEO R-101, abandoning UPEO and following Fiona, beginning the Neucom (I) Arc. If the player does not shoot down either, Rena will eventually shoot the personal plane down herself, also putting the player on the UPEO (III) Arc.
