The Su-37 Terminator is a multipurpose fighter aircraft derived from the Su-35 Super Flanker. It is notable for being the first Flanker-series aircraft with thrust vector control. It made its Ace Combat debut as an unplayable enemy unit in Ace Combat 2 before becoming playable in Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies. Within the confines of the Ace Combat franchise, the Terminator is best known for its appearances in an antagonistic role, famously serving as the signature aircraft of Yellow Squadron in Ace Combat 04 and Gelb Team in Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War.
More recently, the Su-37 made its latest appearances in Ace Combat Infinity and Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.
Etymology
The Su-37's name used throughout the Ace Combat franchise, "Terminator," is not the real-life NATO reporting name (Flanker-F). The nickname is believed to be directly adopted from Sukhoi, referring to the model's vastly improved electronics.[citation needed]
History
Strangereal
Terminators were first known to be deployed by Belka during the Belkan War, where some were manned by a handful of ace pilots during the conflict. The most famous were Orbert Jager and Rainer Altman of the Gelb Team, who were defeated by the Galm Team during the liberation of Directus after establishing Belkan dominance in the southern front.[1]
During the Usean coup d'état, Terminators were used in limited numbers by the Usean Rebel Forces. One of their aces, callsign Ricochet, used the aircraft.[2]
During the Continental War, Terminators were famously flown by the Yellow Squadron, who used their skill in conjunction with its advanced technologies to achieve deadly results through the course of the war[3] until their destruction in the siege of Farbanti.[4] A batch of unused Terminators were obtained by the newborn Yellow Squadron in order to defend Megalith from the Independent State Allied Forces; the members of the squadron paid homage to Yellow Squadron by painting their Terminators in Yellow colors.[5] The squadron was entirely lost defending Megalith in vain.[6]
During the Lighthouse War, Su-37s were employed by the Erusean Air Force during the later part of the war. The most notable Erusean pilot was Russel Faulkner, callsign "Serpent", who was shot down by Trigger over Farbanti during Operation Giant's Step.[7] During Operation Domino, the Ask and Egil Squadrons utilized eight Su-37s to engage the Strider Squadron over Anchorhead.[8]
During the Aurelian War, Su-37s were deployed by the Leasath Air Force. The most notable unit to utilize the aircraft was the elite Chimera Squadron.
Joint Assault universe
Antares 1[9] and Tolya Kiriakov[10] were known to have used the aircraft, the latter switching to the GAF-1 Varcolac with his Varcolac Squadron after losing his jet.[11] Antares used it in the aftermath of the Golden Axe Plan.[9]
Assault Horizon universe
Unlike the real world, the Su-37 was mass-produced by Sukhoi. It proved successful enough to warrant the creation of an export model that replaced the Su-30, the Su-37K (K most likely stands for Kommercheskiy ("Commercial")). On September 12, 2018, apparent mercenaries, recruited by New Russian Federation remnants, equipped numerous conventional explosives. None of them were used due to interference by defending Japan Air Self-Defense Force ASF-X Shinden IIs, one of which shot down a Su-37 that then spiraled into a waterfront warehouse district.[12] The remaining three retreated over the Pacific Ocean.[13]
Infinity universe
Su-37s were available for use by UNF pilots during Operation Eternal Liberation. They were also used by the USEA Federation during that period.[14]
Game Analysis
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown
- "A canard-equipped Su-27 (a Su-27M variant) fitted with thrust vectoring nozzles, making it a highly agile fighter. Boasting phenomenal maneuverability even at low pre-stall speeds, the Su-37 Terminator has demonstrated breathtaking maneuvers such as the Kulbit at airshows. The craft was fitted with experimental thrust vectoring technology, which was eventually passed on to other fighters developed later. Its nickname is "Terminator.""

It is the first aircraft within the Flanker series to incorporate 2DCD thrust-vectoring nozzles resulting in increased turning performance. The addition of canard wings also provide increased stability. In 1996, the aircraft performed the very first Kulbit maneuver at an air show capturing the attention of people across the world. Trivia
- The appearance of the aircraft remains the same in the series except in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, Ace Combat Infinity and Ace Combat 7, in which the Sorbtsiya ECM pods were replaced with wingtip missile launch rails.
- The Su-37 model used in Assault Horizon has the elevators and nozzles a bit swept down by default. It is unknown if this is a glitch or it was intentional.
- ↑ Players could use one Nonstandard Upgrade Request Form instead of credits for the Lv.6 upgrade.
