For the real-world aircraft featured in Ace Combat 2, see Su-35 Super Flanker.

The Su-37 Super Flanker is a highly advanced development of the Su-27 Flanker-B created around the 2040s. A specialized variant called the Su-37 Super Flanker-R also exists, made for and used by UPEO's ace pilot Rena Hirose.

Description[edit]

As with the original Su-37, it achieves superb maneuverability through aerodynamic features and three-dimensional thrust vectoring. [1] It is a highly versatile plane in combat, being able to conduct air dominance and ground attack roles with ease thanks to its large fuselage. Over time, it underwent upgrades such as enhanced powerplants and canards, weight-reducing alloys and composite materials, the inclusion of arrestor hooks for carrier operations and an upgraded in-flight refueling system.[2]

The Super Flanker-R is a specialized variant of the Super Flanker fielded exclusively by Rena. The -R model possesses several hardware differences to the original Flanker, such as the Opto-Neuron-Synapse-Interface (ONSI) neural link system and a reinforced airframe adapted for Rena's flight capabilities. It is also light cyan with Cerulean blue accents instead of UPEO's light gray and brown scheme.

Despite being based on the Su-37 Terminator, its canopy bears more resemblance to the 2-seat Su-30 than the single-seat Terminator. Whether or not it actually has seating for 2 occupants is unknown.

Its specifications are as follows:[1]

  • Length: 22.1 m (73 ft)
  • Width: 14.7 m (48 ft)
  • Height: 6.32 m (20.7 ft)
  • Weight: 34,420 kg (75,880 lb)
  • Top speed:
    • Japanese version: 3,304 km/h (Mach 2.7; 2,053 mph; 1,784 kn)
    • International version: 3,803 km/h (Mach 3.1; 2,363 mph; 2,053 kn)
  • Armor: Normal

History[edit]

Based on the Su-27,[1] the Super Flanker was the second-most advanced aircraft in the Universal Peace Enforcement Organization's arsenal. It was one of the first aircraft acquired by the group, being obtained along with other planes such as the MiG-33 Fulcrum SS and the EF-2000E Typhoon II to avoid accusations of a General Resource hardware monopoly.[2]

The Super Flanker-R, meanwhile, was built at some point after Rena joined UPEO. It is the only aircraft known to be used by her during the Intercorporate War, with the exception of the X-49 Night Raven. After Rena joins Ouroboros, she replaces her Su-37 with the X-49, as such, this plane does not appear at any point afterwards.

Game Analysis[edit]

Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere[edit]

"An all-mighty aircraft that can perform both anti-air and anti-ground duties. With excellent aerodynamic characteristics and high thrust engines with thrust vectoring nozzles, it achieves next-level maneuverability. Around the time of UPEO's creation, to avoid criticism of a General Resource weapon monopoly, the UPEO developed such planes such as the MiG-33, EF2000E, and Su-37 by developing and upgrading existing craft from other companies. It has excellent characteristics in all categories and is well balanced, making it easy to operate. "
Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere - Namco Official Guide Book
"A single-seat twin-engine multi-role fighter. The Super Flanker's superagility [sic] is achieved through superior aerodynamic features and advanced turbofans with thrust-vectoring nozzles.... The Su-37 boasts the superior performance of all the planes in UPEO's arsenal; due to its large and spacious fuselage, the Su-37 can cope admirably with the whole spectrum of duties, from air dominance to ground attack. The UPEO has introduced numerous upgrades to ensure the fighter's viability: increased engine propulsion; new alloys and composites used to construct a stronger fuselage at a reduced weight; addition of an arrester hook for carrier landings; change of the in-flight refuelling [sic] system; differential canards. The avionics - in particular, the cockpit's coffin [sic] system - have been completely overhauled and replaced with newly-developed units. The result is a fighter with far superior performance over the original."
