The Gripen C, also known as the JAS-39C Gripen, is a single-engine multirole aircraft designed as a successor to the AJS 37 Viggen, itself a successor to the J35J Draken. The Gripen C features a delta-wing configuration with canards as well as STOL capabilities. It debuted in Air Combat and subsequently appeared in numerous titles before being replaced by the Gripen E in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.

Ace Combat Infinity
"A multirole light fighter that is used by a total of five countries, including the Swedish Air Force. It is known for its small size, short takeoff capabilities and capacity to carry a variety of weapons. This allows it to launch from a runway and a hangar basically cut out of the mountains, with its light maneuverability allowing it to complete a variety of missions. As an aircraft capable of switching roles during flight, it also has the name "JAS-39C", taking abbreviations from Jakt (air-to-air), Attack (air-to-ground), and Spaning (reconnaissance)."

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War
"Named after the griffon of legend, this aircraft boasts low cost and high maintainability. "Fighter," "attacker," or "recon," this fighter performs all of these roles equally well. It is known for its mission adaptability and high efficiency in battle."
"The JAS designation stands for "fighter," "attack," and "recon," denoting its multirole capabilities. The "Gripen" also boasts low cost and high maneuverability."
In many Ace Combat games, the Gripen C has one IRST sensor on the nose, positioned near the cockpit. In real life, the IRST sensor doesn't exist on the JAS-39C. This feature will be introduced on the JAS-39 Gripen NG. Oddly enough, the IRST mounted on the Super Gripen is located in the same place and looks identical to the one in Ace Combat. It is not known if it was a coincidence.[3]
