The Short-Range Aerial Suppression Air-to-Air Missile (also known as Short-Range Aerial Suppression Missile, abbreviated as SASM) is a special weapon introduced in Ace Combat: Joint Assault. Unlike other weapone, the missile does not require a direct hit to damage or destroy its target. If the target evades the missile it will explode in its proximity, and inflict damage, albeit lower than caused by a direct hit.

Game Analysis

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

"Air-to-air burst missiles. If they are about to be evaded, they will explode even if it is not a direct hit, so they are useful against agile aircraft."

Trivia

  • The missile's way of damaging its target by exploding in proximity is similar to how most real life air-to-air weapons work, in which they use proximity as its primary method to damage the target by sending out shrapnel against it.
  • Despite using an IR guided missile model, AWACS calls out "Fox 3" brevity code when the SASM is launched.
