Megafloat
Megafloat is a large mobile, floating city owned and operated by Neucom Incorporated off the east coast of the Usean continent.
Etymology
While floating cities and islands are common in science fiction and fantasy, Megafloat shares its name with "Mega-Float", a real floating airport prototype constructed in Tokyo Bay in 2000. Research and development on Mega-Float began in 1997 when Japan's then-Ministry of Transport set up the "Mega-Float Airport Investigation Committee".[1]
Description
Megafloat is the only floating city ever made in Earth's history. It is also mobile, able to traverse water at slow speeds.[2] Megafloat was initially built with many private research facilities for the purpose of civilian research.[citation needed] Private residences were also built on the island, sold only to employees of the facilities.[citation needed] Eventually, Neucom militarized the floating city, transforming it into a large multi-service base for the Neucom Emergency Unit. An NEU airbase is present on Megafloat, and the island is also used as a supply point and staging area for Neucom's naval and air forces.[3]
History
Construction
Megafloat's construction is believed to have begun in the early 2000s. Floating platforms with cranes and small facilities were located in Usean waters around the time of the Continental War.[4]
Megafloat's construction was completed in 2039.[5] This, along with other impressive feats by the company, led to the saying, "Neucom makes the impossible possible."[6]
Nemo simulation
Megafloat was the site of multiple battles during Simon Orestes Cohen's simulated Intercorporate War.
Early in the simulation, Neucom sends multiple warships to Megafloat, intending to use it as a staging point for further attacks against General Resource. The Universal Peace Enforcement Organization's Special Armed Response Force, supported by ace pilots from the General Resource Defense Force, sinks Neucom's vessels before they can get underway.[3]
If Nemo defects from UPEO to General Resource, it joins Abyssal Dision and Keith Bryan in an assault on Neucom's military installations on Megafloat.[7] If Nemo stays with General Resource, it later joins Keith Bryan in a second attack against Neucom at Megafloat.[8] Following the battle, Rena Hirose destroys Megafloat with the X-49 Night Raven before returning to the UI-4053 Sphyrna.[9] Before the city fully sinks, a squadron of XR-900 Geopelias takes off from Megafloat;[10] Nemo later intercepts them over Port Edwards.[11]
If Nemo defects from UPEO to Neucom and again to Ouroboros, Ouroboros launches an assault on Megafloat. Nemo and Cynthia Bridgitte Fitzgerald attempt to stop the attack, but Rena destroys Megafloat with the X-49. Nemo and Cynthia destroy the Sphyrna and give chase to Rena's X-49 and Dision's UI-4054 Aurora.[12]
