Schroeder
- "My homeland...It feels so far away now."
- ― Schroeder[1]
Doctor Schroeder[a] is a Belkan scientist, former chief researcher at North Osea Gründer Industries,[2] and a former corporate liaison between Gründer and the EASA. He played a key role in the development of Erusea's drone technology. As a former member of the Grey Men,[note 1] he was dispatched to the EASA by Gründer Industries as part of the organization's scheme to strengthen Erusea and inflame political tensions in Usea.[3]
Despite his deep involvement in Erusea's UAV program, Schroeder suffered a crisis of faith and an epiphany regarding his actions during the late stages of the Lighthouse War, causing him to turn his back on the ideals and organization he once served. He subsequently joined forces with Avril Mead, Spare Squadron, and Rosa Cossette D'Elise. By feeding them crucial information on the structure of the International Space Elevator and on the Erusean radicals' trump cards, he contributed significantly to the outcomes of the war's decisive final engagements.[1]
He is described as having a typical scientist's temperament.[6]
Biography
Born and raised in Belka, Schroeder joined Gründer Industries at some point in his life; he later grew to embrace the Grey Men's ideology of reclaiming control of Belka's fate by claiming revenge for their previous humiliation.[1] By 2019, he had attained the position of chief researcher.[2]
At some point before the outbreak of the Lighthouse War, Schroeder was sent to work as a liaison to the Erusean Air and Space Administration on the Usean continent, in order to gather the flight data of former ace pilot Mihaly A. Shilage and create artificial intelligence for use in unmanned aerial vehicles. He recorded Mihaly's movements using an advanced flight suit.[7]
Following Mihaly's second sortie, Schroeder was tasked with comparing his performance between sorties by calculating the change in his physiology under the stress of combat. At this point, he grew more reluctant to complete his work, feeling reservations and doubts about the ideology he had previously readily accepted. Nevertheless, he ordered a new flight suit for Mihaly, after the previous suit proved ineffective in allowing the test pilot to reach his full potential. He later observed Mihaly as the ace pilot took off on a test flight, realizing in that moment that Mihaly only truly felt at home when in the sky.[8]
After the destruction of Usea's satellite network, Schroeder took the data chip containing Mihaly's flight data and left for Selatapura in an EASA transport, taking his assistant and Mihaly's granddaughters with him.[9]
On October 1, 2019, the transport flew over Anchorhead Bay while escorted by multiple unmanned F/A-18F Super Hornets. They soon encountered the Strider Squadron and AWACS Long Caster, informing them that they had civilians on board. The transport was subsequently targeted by Erusean conservative forces due to the latter's belief that the EASA and their collaboration with Belka was responsible for the war, but these fighters were quickly intercepted by Strider Squadron. Schroeder's escort drones then turned on Strider and requested multiple MQ-99s for assistance using their remote activation rights. Schroeder explained to Long Caster that the unmanned escorts were acting on their own volition, leading to Strider Squadron destroying all drones in the area. The transport subsequently escaped the airspace safely.[10]
Once the transport arrived in Selatapura, Schroeder uploaded Mihaly's flight data at the International Space Elevator's support facility, which was converted into a drone production line. He later encountered Avril Mead, Princess Rosa, Tabloid and a 444th prison guard. Ionela, who learned of Schroeder's true intentions, destroyed the data chip containing the data by stealing a handgun from the prison guard. After she lamented about her grandfather's suffering and the loss of her country, Schroeder felt remorseful for his actions. He was approached by Avril, who intended to destroy all facilities producing the drones. He informed her of the scheduled construction of two new UAVs at one of the facilities and showed their locations. Schroeder was then approached by the Princess and was asked about his thoughts on Vincent Harling's actions that led to his death.[1]
While his fate after the war is unclear, Schroeder appeared in a GAZE article written about the conflict, being named as the chief architect of Erusea's drone project.[2]
