YR-302 Fregata

From Ace Combat Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The YR-302 Fregata is a fictional delta-wing attacker from the Strangereal universe.

Etymology

The name "Fregata" is based on the genus in which all species of frigatebirds belong.

Design

The YR-302 Fregata was a specialized attack aircraft produced sometime by the 2020s. It features a unique body design as well as an unconventional quadruple-engine arrangement, causing rumors that it was actually a spacecraft. Contrary to such rumors, it has poor high-altitude capabilities.[1]

The Fregata is extremely heavy due to its armor, weapons payload, and massive fuel capacity. However, its four large engines combined with vector thrust nozzles add to the aircraft's mobility. Its complicated body design leads to the aircraft rapidly consuming fuel and having a short cruise time. As a result, the Fregata is highly demanding in maintenance. The aircraft uses the minimum necessary electronic and COFFIN equipment to counterbalance the maintenance requirement.[1]

History

Strangereal

During the early days of the Aurelian War, Falco 1 used the aircraft as his main attacker.

Joint Assault universe

The Fregata was made available for Antares Squadron during the Valahia Crisis.

Trivia

  • The YR-302 Fregata is the second Ace Combat X aircraft that indirectly references to Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere:
    • It has most traits based on the Neucom Incorporated R-series aircraft.
    • YR-302, its designation, is a reference to R-302, the early development name of the R-352 Sepia, as seen on Kei Yoshimizu's concept drafts.
    • Its spacecraft rumors homage the R-352's Star Fighter classification.
    • Special 2(Color 4) strikes a resemblance with Cynthia Bridgitte Fitzgerald's personal aircraft colors, albeit with the difference that the bottom is black and lacking any additional blue highlights.
    • Its namesake is a bird species, similar to the XR-900 Geopelia.
  • The model featured in Ace Combat Xi: Skies of Incursion features a traditional glass canopy, as opposed to the COFFIN-based sealed cockpit of the original version. As such, the Fregata is the only COFFIN-equipped aircraft to have been depicted with a glass cockpit.
    • An explanation for this would be that since Falco 1 is part of an experimental aircraft test team, he was possibly given an early model of the Fregata to test, likely before the Aurelian War, and continued to operate it at the conflict's beginning.
