Gunther is a region located in southwestern Usea. It encompasses a body of water known as Gunther Bay,[2][3] a section of land known as Gunther Peninsula,[4] and a shoreline known as Gunther Strand.[5][4] Gunther is located northwest of Axel Bay and west of Chopinburg.[2]
Formerly a part of the Federal Republic of Erusea, the region is now an IUN trust territory.[6] Prior to the Lighthouse War, the Kingdom of Erusea maintained a claim on Gunther.[7]
The independent city-state of Selatapura is located on the southern tip of the Gunther Peninsula.[8] The International Space Elevator is located in the waters of Gunther Bay, where the Opera House drilling facility was also situated before its destruction.[8][5]
History
The Gunther Peninsula had been part of Erusea for an unknown amount of time.
On April 14, 1998, during the Usean coup d'état, Scarface Squadron was tasked with destroying Opera House as the Usean Rebel Forces were using it to fuel their troop movements. Scarface's operation was a success, leading to a huge decline in the rebels' fuel output and allowing the Usean Allied Forces to regain control of the region.[5]
During the Continental War, ISAF liberated the region sometime between July 10 and August 15, 2005, following the liberation of San Salvacion.[9] Following the war, Erusea had to relinquish the region to the IUN as a trust territory.[6]
By 2019, however, Erusea still maintained their claim on Gunther.[7] When the Lighthouse War broke out in May, Erusea quickly secured the Gunther region and International Space Elevator.[10] Throughout the war, multiple operations occured around Selatapura in the Gunther region, including Operations Lighthouse Keeper,[8] Daredevil,[11] and Hush (the final battle of the war).[12]

Trivia
- The various names for the Gunther region have been used sporadically in the series:
- Gunther Peninsula only appeared in the official map of Strangereal from Ace Combat 5 and Ace Combat X.[4]
- Gunther Strand appeared on the same official map,[4] but was also labeled in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy as "Gunther Sd."[5]
- Gunther Bay only appeared in the official map of Strangereal from Ace Combat 7.[2]
- Two-pronged Strategy's briefing erroneously names the area "Gandar Bay" in both the subtitles and audio. The subtitles were later corrected to "Gunther Bay" in an update.[13][10]
- "Strand" is German for beach, "Gunther" is a German first name.
