Rank
Military ranks, also known as rank insignia,[a] are used to signify a player's total accumulated score in certain modes of Ace Combat games. Ranks were introduced in Ace Combat 2 but did not return until Ace Combat: Joint Assault; they have appeared in every Ace Combat game since. A player's rank is dictated through level-based progression; destroying more enemies will award more experience points to eventually level up to the next rank in the list.
In Ace Combat 2, ranks measure individual campaign runs; a different rank is awarded for each run. In Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy, a player's rank is tied to their save file and measures cumulative performance in campaign and Free Mission. In all other games—Joint Assault, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, Ace Combat Infinity, and Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown—ranks roughly measure how many points a player has earned in multiplayer.
Ace Combat 2
Ace Combat 2 works differently with the rank system from future games. The player is awarded their rank depending on how many units they destroyed through one campaign run. Upon starting a new campaign run, they will start from the first rank in the list, Airman. To achieve the final rank, Commander in Chief, the player must destroy nearly every single enemy unit in all missions that they play, excluding respawning units.
If the player ends a campaign run at First Lieutenant or higher, the Music Player is unlocked.[2] If the player ends a campaign run at Commander in Chief, the ending will display the text "You're the Ace pilot".

Ace Combat: Joint Assault
In Ace Combat: Joint Assault, ranks only apply to multiplayer. A player's rank increases as they shoot down enemies and other players within VS Mode. When creating a lobby in either VS Mode or the campaign, the host can restrict people who can join to a specific range of ranks above or below the host's rank: ±0 (same rank only), ±2, ±4, ±6, or no limit.[3]
Enemy units award a certain amount of experience points to the player that destroys them:[3]
| Enemy | Experience Points |
|---|---|
| Another player | 300 × rank multiplier |
| COM (Rookie) | 30 |
| COM (Normal) | 60 |
| COM (Veteran) | 90 |
| COM (Expert) | 120 |
| COM (Ace) | 150 |
| All other enemies | 20 |
The total experience points awarded is further modified by a post-match multiplier, based on the player's/team's final place in the match:[3]
| Match Type | 1st Place | 2nd Place | 3rd Place | 4th Place | 5th Place | 6th Place | 7th Place | 8th Place |

The names and number of ranks in Joint Assault are identical to those from Ace Combat 2. The following is the amount of cumulative experience points required for each rank, as well as the multiplier applied to the 300 points received when they are shot down by another player. For example, shooting down a player with the Second Lieutenant rank awards 900 experience points (300 × rank multiplier of 3.0) before the post-match multiplier.[3]

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy
The rank system from Ace Combat 2 reprises in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy. The list of ranks is also identical from Ace Combat 2, but instead of being awarded a final rank at the end of the game, a rank is determined by experience points and applied to the save file as a whole. The experience points can be gained by completing missions and like in Joint Assault, each rank progressively requires more experience points to obtain. The player can continuously "farm" experience points in Free Mission and Campaign modes in order to achieve higher ranks.
The rank system in Assault Horizon Legacy is used to unlock aircraft customization parts. Although a few aircraft are unlocked through rank.
Following is a list of ranks featured in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy. The experience points that player gains are cumulative. The highest of total experience points possible to gain is 250,000 points.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
Identical to Joint Assault, ranks in Ace Combat: Assault Horizon were exclusive to multiplayer. They did not appear as text; they only showed as images next to the player's name in multiplayer lobbies.
Ace Combat Infinity
Ace Combat Infinity utilizes the rank system with more weight, linking it to the core gameplay feature of tuning. The player will be locked from upgrades that are further on the aircraft tree than their rank allows them. Additionally, unlocked nicknames cannot be used until the rank of Second Lieutenant. However, there are no requirements past Major. Once players become a Major, the entire aircraft tree is available to them.
In addition, each rank has a certain number of "levels" that must be progressed through in order to reach the next rank. For example, there are 10 levels for Warrant Officer. Once the player reaches Warrant Officer #1, their next "level up" will send them to Second Lieutenant #40.
Players earn a certain amount of rank experience points after each multiplayer mission in Infinity. Each rank progressively requires more experience points to obtain.
During all beta test periods of Infinity, the highest rank available was Second Lieutenant.
