"This is a hefty trophy we've got here, boys. Don't slip up now!"
Camilla Almeida

Cocoon Squadron, officially Carrier Air Wing 14 of the Usean Second Fleet, was a former Usean Allied Forces unit assigned to the Second Fleet's flagship aircraft carrier, Arquette. Cocoon accompanied the Second Fleet in joining the Usean Rebel Forces during the Usean coup d'état. The unit was led by Camilla Almeida.

History

During or prior to the Usean coup d'etat, Cocoon Squadron earned a reputation as the most skilled fighter squadron in the Usean Allied Forces' navy, and was assigned to the Usean Second Fleet.[1]

At some early point in the coup, however, Cocoon defected to the Usean Rebel Forces, who opposed the signing of the Spring Sea Treaty with the Osean government. Squadron leader Camilla Almeida's decision to defect was primarily driven by a frustration with how soldiers were treated by the Allied Forces.[2]

On July 7, 1998, Cocoon Squadron was assigned to escort the Second Fleet in the vicinity of the Skully Islands in order to strike a lethal blow to the Allied Forces. They were intercepted by the Scarface Squadron, who sunk the entire fleet, including the Arquette.[1]

Cocoon then engaged Scarface in a dogfight, which was quickly interrupted by a mysterious red aircraft. While the aircraft engaged Scarface, Cocoon took the opportunity to regroup. After the red aircraft retreated due to battle damage, Cocoon returned for a final confrontation with Scarface, with the latter emerging victorious.[1]

The fates of the squadron's members after the battle are uncertain.

Trivia

  • The concept of a butterfly emblem was later seen in Ace Combat Infinity as the emblem of the Papillon Project and the QFA-44 Carmillas.
  • Despite being called "Carrier Air Wing 14," the term carrier air wing actually properly refers to a larger collection of naval air squadrons that are assigned to a single aircraft carrier and utilize different types of aircraft, rather than a single fighter squadron.
