The United Nations (UN) is an organization comprised of multiple governments whose purpose is to promote international cooperation between all of the world's nations. The UN's primary objectives include maintaining international security and providing humanitarian aid.
The UN was briefly mentioned on the European website for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. East African countries requested the UN's help against the SRN, but the UN turned the issue over to NATO.[2]
The UN played a much larger role in the universe of Ace Combat Infinity. The organization maintained two fictional military branches, the United Nations Forces and the United Nations Independent Commando Services, the latter of which hired mercenary forces. The United Nations entered conflict against a multinational terrorist network—the Sons of Troia—that later morphed into the USEA Federation. The Sons of Troia insurgency and the early stages of the subsequent USEAn War were depicted in both the single-player campaign of Infinity and its Online Co-Op Missions multiplayer mode.
Structure
The organization of the United Nations is split into six principal bodies. The only one of these mentioned in Infinity is the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which maintains international peace and security. Unlike in the real world, the UNSC's Military Staff Committee was active in Infinity and commanded armed military forces.
During the Sons of Troia insurgency, the Military Staff Committee commanded two armed branches: the United Nations Forces (UNF), also known as the "regular force," and the United Nations Independent Commando Services (UNICS), also known as the "Pirates" due to being mercenaries hired for temporary jobs. While the composition of the UNICS varied depending on the operation, the UNF included a more typical air-ground-naval structure; the air force, in particular, was referred to at least once as the UNAF.[3] UNF units included AWACS Sky-Eye and Ridgeback Squadron in the air force[3] and the UNF Pacific Fleet[4] and UNF Marine Commandos in the navy.[3]
At the start of the USEAn War, the UNSC moved all air units from the UNF and some that worked with the UNICS into Task Force 118, a newly-formed branch directly under Military Staff Committee command. Bone Arrow Squadron was one UNICS mercenary squadron that joined Task Force 118; their leader, Goodfellow, became Task Force 118's commander.[1] All other UNF units remained as part of the UNF.[5][6]
The UNSC was also in charge of the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission, which inspected facilities in Iyuli following the first terrorist attack on Tokyo and published an inspection report that revealed the existence of the Orbital Laser Defense System.[7]
History
After the Ulysses Disaster and the events that followed, the United Nations established a formal military branch, the United Nations Forces, to deal with conflicts around the globe. In addition, a program for private military contractors, the United Nations Independent Commando Services, was also established to assist in its operations.
UNICS hired a private military company named Arrows Air Defense and Security to assist in a number of operations under the command of the UNF. After Operation Override, the PMCs that provided help were disbanded and reformed under Task Force 118.
