- "My husband is an Air Force pilot, and refers to fighter planes as 'angels.' When he'd go to a mission that kept him away from home, I'd tell him in frustration to go dance with the angels."
- ― Melissa Herman[3]
Albert Herman was a Republic of Emmeria Air Force fighter pilot assigned to the 8th Air Division.[2] He was married to Melissa Herman, but was killed in action during the Emmeria-Estovakia War.
Biography
Albert Herman met Melissa and witnessed together Ulysses 1994XF04's impact on July 1999, making more wishes than they could count.[1] They married, settled in an upscale residential area[4] with a view of King's Bridge,[3] and in 2006 had a daughter: Matilda.[5]
Their domestic life was for the most part filled with peace and happiness. Yet, he was often away from home for his duties, and took a habit of calling fighter craft "angels;" Melissa, slightly dissatisfied,[4] sarcastically told him every time to "dance with the angels" whenever he went to work, which their daughter picked up on. He flew an F/A-18F Super Hornet adorned with nose art of an angelic figure in a red dress, named after his wife.[3][1] Still, he was caring as a father enough to gift his daughter a toy biplane.[5]
The Emmeria-Estovakia War's D-day saw the couple parted, with Albert showing the usual loving face to his wife before departure. In the opening months, he was shot down during the Emmerian military evacuation of Gracemeria. The remains of his jet were found by Melissa in a field while traveling with a group of refugees to west Emmeria, who recognized it by the angel nose art on its side; this, combined with the apparent loss of her daughter from seeing her burned school bus, devastated Melissa into utter emptiness at the thought of losing everything, two weeks before hearing of Matilda's survival.[1]
Four months later during the Emmerian liberation of San Loma, Albert's passing resonated with Melissa while performing field cardiopulmonary resuscitation on an ejected Estovakian fighter pilot shot down by Talisman, with Ludmila Tolstaya's help; she reflected that her husband could have perished this way, while Ludmila saw her lover and future husband—Toscha Mijasik—in the dying pilot they would save.[6]
Estovakian forces eventually discovered and collected his remains and personal effects (a Herman family photo with Albert's face burned off, leaving his red shirt), along with the F/A-18F (designated "Downed Emmerian Aircraft No. 25468"), and published a classified report detailing the incident at Airforce Headquarters Victoria Barracks. V.C.I. In the wake of Gracemeria's liberation and bombardment by the railgun superweapon Chandelier, Victor Voychek produced and gave a copy of the report at Gracemeria Central Station to Melissa.[7]
