An Erusean AD tank in Anchorhead

Air Defense Tanks (known in-game as AD Tanks) are mechanized, armored ground units focused on air defense.

Description

Functionality-wise, AD Tanks are essentially a combination of a CIWS and a surface-to-air missile with the durability of a tank. Like CIWS, they can intercept the player's missiles. However, they can also fire missiles of their own like SAMs and take two missiles to destroy, just like tanks.

They are uncommon targets and appear sparingly, typically defending high-value locations or appearing in missions with many ground targets.

History

Strangereal

AD tanks were utilized by Free Erusea during their armed uprising in 2014. Several AD tanks took part in an assault on an IUN base at Scofield Plateau, but were repelled by the Mobius Squadron and other IUN forces.[1]

AD tanks were later utilized by Erusea during the Lighthouse War. Several AD tanks escorted Erusean armored columns during Operation Dragon Breath, but were destroyed along with the rest of the Erusean ground forces.[2] They were also present in Sierraplata while Erusea attempted to launch IRBMs at Osean forces, but were unable to prevent the launch silos from being destroyed by the Long Range Strategic Strike Group.[3] A large amount of AD tanks were present in Anchorhead Bay during Operation Domino, but were unable to stop the LRSSG from destroying the Rán Fleet and the port facilities.[4] More units were present during Operation Giant's Step, but were again ultimately ineffective.[5]

After the fall of the Usean satellite network, a breakaway independence movement from Shilage acquired multiple AD tanks, using them to defend their stronghold, Shilage Castle. These units were destroyed when the base was raided for supplies by the LRSSG.[6]

Infinity universe

AD tanks were frequently used by the USEA Federation during Operation Eternal Liberation.[7][8][9][10]

Trivia

  • In Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, the AD tanks are modeled after the Soviet 2K22 Tunguska. In real life, the Tunguska functions as a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun armed with surface-to-air autocannons and missiles, but is not designed to serve as a C-RAM (counter-rocket, artillery mortar) system.
