The player character is the in-universe character that players control when playing the campaign in an Ace Combat game. Player characters are always the central protagonist of the campaign they feature in.

Overview

Almost all player characters have been silent protagonists; they usually have no voice lines and no known dialogue during gameplay. Some silent protagonists are also mute,[2][3] but this is not always the case.[4] The player's use of dialogue options (exclusive to Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War) or Wingman Command would suggest the characters being controlled at the time are not mute. The only player characters to have audible voice lines are Phoenix in Ace Combat 2 and all of the player characters in Assault Horizon. Ace in Advance also has dialogue and is not a silent protagonist, but Advance does not feature voice acting.

Phoenix and Mobius 1 are the only player characters who are playable in more than one game; both are playable in three games each. Phoenix is the only player character who is the central protagonist of more than one game.

Ace Combat: Joint Assault and Assault Horizon are the only games to have more than one playable character. Joint Assault allows up to four players to play as members of Antares Squadron when playing the campaign in online co-op (with the first player taking control of Antares One, who is also the player character in single-player). The single-player campaign in Assault Horizon gives players control over William Bishop, Guns, Doug Robinson, and Janice Rehl; in Co-op Battle, up to three players take control of William Bishop, Warwolf 3, and Warwolf 4.[note 1]
