MiG-29K
The MiG-29K is a carrier-based variant of the MiG-29A Fulcrum.
History
Strangereal
The submersible aviation cruiser Alicorn was capable of carrying the MiG-29K.[1] When the submarine embarked on its only combat voyage, the Alicorn operated the Rafale M as its air wing's aircraft of choice.[1][2]
Behind the scenes
The MiG-29K has not physically appeared in any Ace Combat game, but was briefly mentioned in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown as one of the various aircraft models the Alicorn was capable of operating.[1]
During early development of the SP Missions, DLC director Hisaharu Tago initially believed the Alicorn's air wing, SACS, was intended for aerial combat; he thus planned on having the unit fly the MiG-29K. In addition to requiring a new aircraft model, this would have gone against brand director Kazutoki Kono's intention of demonstrating how evil the faction was;[3] of the four aircraft models the Alicorn can carry (MiG-29K, Su-33, F/A-18F, and Rafale M[1]), only the Rafale M can carry nuclear-armed missiles in real life,[note 1] so Tago switched SACS to the Rafale M at the last minute.[3]
Footnotes
- ↑ While the cruise missile carried by the TGT SACS Rafale during "Unexpected Visitor" is not directly stated to have a nuclear warhead, David North believes it has a WMD of some kind and its destruction results in a large explosion.[1]
